Partnerships 101

Working together to achieve greater impact

How many times have you been asked on a grant application: “Please describe any partner entities with which your organization collaborates” or “Explain the nature and benefits of the collaboration?”

Recent surveys conducted by the Bridgespan Group and the Patterson Foundation reveal that 91 percent of nonprofits engage in some form of a partnership or collaboration, which can lead to strategic alliances, program integration, cost-sharing, funding alliance, achievement of shared goals, and significant community impact.

In this interactive session we will discuss:

  • Why nonprofits collaborate?
  • What types of partnerships are available?
  • How to establish a partnership?
  • How to involve your team in relationship development and maintenance?
  • How to manage and improve the collaboration?

Grant Professional Certification (GPC) Competencies covered in this session:

  • Knowledge of methods and strategies that cultivate and maintain relationships between fund-seeking and recipient organizations and funders
    1. Identify characteristics of mutually beneficial relationships between fund seekers and funders.
    2. Identify strategies to determine funder-relation approaches that suit fund-seeking entities’ missions, cultures, and values.
    3. Identify methods to help fund-seeking organizations create effective collaborations with other organizations appropriate to funders’ missions and goals.
    4. Identify methods of relationship cultivation, communication, recognition, and stewardship that might appeal to specific funders.
